Reggae Spotlight: Samory I The Rookie

Reggae Spotlight: Samory I the Rookie

Artist Spotlight: Samory I The RookieReggae Spotlight: Samory I the Rookie  by Manny P @VIRasta505

In recent years on the reggae scene we have seen an influx of new conscious reggae acts come along in what I would like to call the reggae revival. Acts like Protoje, Jah9, Jesse Royal, and the head general Chronixx, with others too numerous to mention. The young fresh injection of reggae music is plentiful and many talents are coming from the inner confines of Jamrock. Nevertheless, with all of the great young talent hitting the streets I can testify for some to be more notable than most. In the first addition to the “Reggae Spotlight” I would like to introduce Samory I a gifted vocalist from Jamaica who is hitting the scene and could potentially be considered in the upper tier of roots music.

I have had the pleasure of catching onto Samory I in some Dubplates about two years ago dubbing his track “Take Me to That Land” which is a repatriation tune that can captivate the ears with his soulful delivery.  Ever since then I have been searching and waiting for more tunes to drop. In July 2017 his debut album “Black Gold” released from Rory Stone Love studios; which is a phenomenal sound system/production may I add.

The album has tons of gems which highlights the potential of Samory I to blaze up the message to the world. “Rasta Nuh Gangsta” is an anthem for young Rasta “yutes” across the globe. The simple opening line of the tune sets the tone for his message he conveys in the music which is the stereotype of young black males and the struggles faced on a daily basis. “Because I’m Black”, “I am gad”, as well as others on the album blast the message home of the current issues that plague the black community not just in Caribbean, but across the diaspora.

With that Samory I sticks to root of reggae music and broadcasts soul and feeling across his delivery over his unique vocal style and manipulation of his voice over the riddim, which stands out as a charming refresh to the often direct approach of other artistes who chant Rastafari. I am thoroughly impressed with the album. The album gets a 4.5 from me. He just concluded some dates in Europe which apparently was a huge success. Samory I has the potential to be a mainstay in the reggae community. He is fresh, unique, and has all the talent to keep consistent with good vibes and good music.
